Lights on at the Liberty Theater this Friday, 6/2!

The public is invited to celebrate lighting of the Liberty Theater’s marquee and sidewalk vaults on Friday, June 2, 2017 after Sound Downtown in Brackenbury Square concludes at 8pm. Please gather in front of the Liberty Theater at 611 Main Street for brief remarks from Liberty Theater Preservation Alliance (LTPA) Co-Chair Jan Johnson before the switch is flipped to turn on the lights under the Liberty’s iconic marquee and in the sub-sidewalk vaults.

Funding for the lighting project was raised by donations to the LTPA and a $500 matching signage grant from Beautiful Downtown Lewiston (BDL) in the fall of 2016. BDL raises funds for signage grants each year by selling sponsorships of the banners hung on the light poles on 5th Street. Merchant commitments to sponsor signage grants are due by June 30. Sign grant applications are due September 30 and the grant recipient has until June 30 of the following year to complete the signage project.

“Through the signage grants, BDL helps our members create a vital, vibrant streetscape,” said Courtney Kramer, BDL Executive Director. “This project wouldn’t work without investment made by the sponsors and the assistance of Image! Design and the City of Lewiston to design and manufacture the banners and hang them.”

Re-lighting the Liberty Theater’s marquee lights is a mark the progress made by the LTPA towards revitalizing the historic theater after acquiring the rights to purchase the building from investor Mark Alexander of Landmark Property Group in late 2015. The LTPA has completed a facility study of the building thanks to grant funding from the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the Inland 360 Mud Run. Volunteers are hard at work for the LTPA gathering information about the community’s preferences for types of programming in the Liberty Theater, which the LTPA envisions as a venue for movies, lectures, small performances and community events.
