The Economic Vitality Committee will host a yearly tour of downtown residential and commercial spaces in April. The 2025 Event will be postponed due to an important infrastructure improvement campaign, but will be rescheduled at the conclusion of the campaign. Some of the spaces are ready to move into and others are in the planning stages. There is an interactive mixer immediately following the tour for those people who are interested in learning more about commercial spaces and/or living on the upper stories of our historic downtown district.

POSITIVE IMPACT OF UPPER FLOOR RESIDENTIAL UNITS

Utilization of upper floors in downtown buildings diversifies a property owner’s income stream from mixed-use building, which can fund reinvestment in the building to keep sidewalk-level space attractive to commercial tenants. A diverse mix of uses also relates positively to the property taxes generated in a Main Street area.

Residents and tenants of upper floor apartments, offices, or other businesses, become loyal customers of the coffee houses, restaurants, shops, and service businesses in the downtown district.

Those residents and tenants also create additional foot traffic downtown, which adds to a sense of vitality and positively impacts public safety.

DOWNTOWN LEWISTON IS MOVIN ON UP!

There are approximately 90 upper floor residential units in down-town Lewiston, not to mention LCSC's 114 bed dormitory: Clearwater Hall (corner of Main & Fifth).

Downtown Lewiston has seen an upgrade in upper floor vacant spaces using the Main Street™ program to educate property owners on the importance of residents in the downtown corridor.

Since 2006, twenty new apartment units have been created in formerly vacant second floor space. Each of the 5 building owners of these units maintains a waiting list.
